Sugar attains top spot among Port of Santos exports in January/24

The Port of Santos kicked off 2024 with record-breaking cargo throughput, some 11.9 million tonnes in January. The significant volume of sugar that arrived at the Port of Santos that month boosted sugar shipments by 71.1% compared to the same period last year, totaling 2 million tonnes, a performance that was decisive for the 16.9% growth compared to January 2022.
“It is gratifying to start the year breaking records, not just for the number itself, but because it shows that the Port of Santos can meet the demands of Brazilian foreign trade,” celebrated Anderson Pomini, President of the Santos Port Authority (APS).

Soybeans, coffee, meats, and fuel oil in exports, and fertilizer and diesel oil in imports, also deserve a mention with growth rates of 51.8%, 69%, 6.1%, 159.9%, 28.9%, and 115.3%, respectively.
The total number of exports was 8 million tonnes, an increase of 17.8%, and imports reached 3.9 million tonnes, a growth of 15%.
Containerized cargo reached 410,878 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) in January, also a record for the month, with a 16.4% increase compared to the same period in 2023.
Solid bulk cargo totaled 5 million tonnes, a 13.9% increase over the same period in 2023 and the best mark for the period. Sugar and soybeans stood out in this segment.
Liquid bulks reached 1.7 million tonnes, a 23.2% increase compared to the same period last year. Fuel oil and diesel oil are the top cargoes in this category.
Ship dockings numbered 439, a 10% increase.
Trade Flow
The Port of Santos’ share in Brazil’s trade flow increased to 28.4% (in January 2023 it was 27.6%). China accounted for 23.3% of all national trade transactions with foreign partners through the Port of Santos.
