Week 202335

Suzano is investing in the development of a new intermodal terminal along the MS-240 road in the city of Inocência, Mato Grosso do Sul, to improve its logistical operations and assure an effective production flow from its newly created facility in Ribas do Rio Pardo. The primary goal is to use railroads to convey the company’s pulp to the Port of Santos, located on the coast of São Paulo. Suzano anticipates not only streamlining its operations, but also reducing its environmental footprint, contributing to a more sustainable approach, with this new connection.

Rail Transport and Environmental Considerations

Spanning an approximate area of 24,200 m², the new intermodal terminal is set to be a pivotal point in the evolution of the company’s logistical framework. Comprising around 8,800 meters of both internal and external rail lines, the terminal will incorporate facilities that ease the storage and manipulation of empty and loaded wagons.

Maurício Miranda, the Director of Engineering at Suzano, underscores the importance of opting for rail transportation in terms of mitigating the environmental impact. He notes that Suzano is already “carbon negative,” sequestering more carbon dioxide (CO₂) than it emits. This new project shows the company’s dedication to increasing sustainability.

Employment Opportunities and Regional Development

The ongoing construction of the Mato Grosso do Sul-based terminal, which took its first steps in the first half of 2023, currently employs around 280 workers in three work fronts. The most labor-intensive stage of construction is slated for November of this year, with an expected creation of roughly 320 job opportunities.

Upon completion, projected for the third quarter of next year, the terminal is anticipated to employ around 80 professionals for operational roles. This investment transcends the realm of logistics infrastructure, playing a pivotal role in the overall socioeconomic development of the region.

Intermodal Terminals

Suzano will operate two intermodal terminals in the state as a result of this investment. The first, which opened in Aparecida do Taboado in 2017, plays an important role for the Três Lagoas Unit’s production flow. Currently, the new terminal in Inocência builds up the company’s logistical framework, allowing for more efficient and sustainable transit of pulp.

Port of Santos

In conjunction with the new terminal investment in Brazil’s midwest, Suzano is concurrently modernizing its terminals in the Port of Santos. The organization is installing gantry cranes and bridge crane systems to augment safety and efficiency in cargo loading and unloading, particularly for rail-transported goods.
