On Thursday (29), a task force began an operation to remove five boats adrift in Guanabara Bay, which are stranded near Conceição Island in Niterói. The process should take approximately 25 days. The boats are mostly made of wood and are medium in size – the largest is around 28m.
Álvaro Luiz Savio, president of PortosRio, who leads the task force, was present at the site, as well as representatives of the other institutions involved in this project: the Captaincy of the Ports of Rio de Janeiro (CPRJ), State Secretariat of Energy and Economy of the Sea (Seenemar), State Department of Environment and Sustainability (SEAS), State Institute of the Environment (INEA) and City Hall of Niterói.
The work is based on a report by the Port Authority, which identified 51 abandoned vessels and hulls in Guanabara Bay. All of them were deemed forfeit by the Maritime Authority, an essential step for being removed.
