Nearly 95% of tax auditors in senior positions have resigned at the Santos customs office

Nearly 95% of tax auditors in leadership positions have resigned at the Port of Santos customs office, the largest in Brazil. The information was given by Sindifisco Santos, the union that represents tax officials in the region. The reason is the federal government’s inaction in addressing the grievances of the category.
According to the union, the class demands the regulation of the efficiency bonus, a process that has been put to a halt since 2016, as well as the opening of a public tender to replenish the agency’s staff. Furthermore, the category is contesting the allocation of more than half of the Federal Revenue’s 2022 budget to grant Federal Police wage hikes.
Resignations have been happening since last week, though only formalized in the last few days due to the end of the year holidays. After 12 resignations last week and another 8 this week, 20 of the 22 top positions at Santos Customs are now vacant. The customs delegate, Richard Fernando Amoedo Neubath, and the assistant delegate, Reinaldo Augusto Angelini have resigned among others.
In addition to the series of resignations in place since the 27 of December, the Santos Customs Office is under “Standard Operation”. As a result, the analysis, selection, and distribution of import declarations, or DIs, is done with greater prudence, resulting in a longer delay in the flow of international trade. In addition to Santos, other customs in the country will also enter into Standard Operation.
There has been no progress in negotiations with the government, according to Sindifisco Santos president Elias Carneiro Jr. As a result, actions will continue and may result in customs lines.
“It is to be expected that items and inputs will take longer to be released as a result of the Standard Operation and all the resignations over time. Our goal is not to cause disruption in the country, but we have no choice but to maintain the Standard Operation until the government complies with our demands and honors the agreement”, said Carneiro, in a statement.
SPA
The Santos Port Authority (SPA) has informed that the Port of Santos is operating normally in its public accesses. Berthings, loadings, and landings are all determined by different circumstances. As a result, it is impossible to blame any delays in exports or imports on the approval of local authorities.
SPA specifically stated that it receives monthly consolidated data on cargo and ship handling at the Port of Santos from private parties, but that it does not handle cargo to comment on the impact on operations.
