In August, the company that operates the Paranaguá Container Terminal (TCP) signed a deal to purchase 17 Terminal Tractors (TTs). The arrival of these items, used for transporting containers between ships, yards, warehouses, and railways, is slated for November and will increase the terminal’s fleet by 33%.
The KT2i 4×2-model tractors, manufactured in Poland by Kalmar, are the most advanced currently on the market. These new trucks have the capacity to transport up to 85 tonnes of cargo and offer three days of uninterrupted operations, twice as much as the working period of the vehicles currently in use at the terminal. “The renovation of TCP’s Terminal Tractor fleet will bring more efficiency to terminal operations and ensure greater safety for our employees,” explained the Superintendent of Operations and Safety, Nicolas Wang.
The chart below further describes the movement of containers at TCP between Jan 2019 and Jul 2023. The data is from DataLiner.

TCP’s vehicles have protection systems (ROPS and FOPS) and structural reinforcements in the cabin, which improve employee safety. Furthermore, the models improve driver comfort and ergonomics with larger cabins, adjustable seats, and pneumatic suspension. The automatic cabin lift also makes maintenance easier. TCP plans to purchase an extra 27 terminal trailers (truck semi-trailers) to supplement its fleet in addition to the TTs.
“Investments in both equipment and infrastructure, as well as hiring and training of personnel, directly reflect in these results,” says Wang. TCP achieved 1.16 million TEUs throughput in 2022, a one-year record and 619% greater than the amount handled in 1998, the year the company was created.
