Cabotage services resumed at TCP, the operator of the Paranaguá Container Terminal, in early 2024 and have since gained traction among businesses of all sizes in Paraná and neighboring states.

Starting with an initial throughput of 367 TEUs in January, cabotage volumes at the terminal grew steadily month-over-month, peaking at 2,547 TEUs in May. “Over the first five months of 2024, we closely monitored the resurgence of cabotage at TCP and the gradual adaptation of our customers. The integration of this sustainable, reliable, and cost-effective logistics solution underscores the success of this partnership,” said Carolina Merkle Brown, TCP’s commercial manager for shipping lines and market intelligence.

By the end of the year, TCP handled a total of 16,426 TEUs through cabotage, equivalent to 195,000 tonnes of fully loaded cargo. Outbound shipments to other states more than doubled inbound volumes, with pulp and paper (76,000 tonnes) and frozen meat (9,000 tonnes) leading exports. On the import side, consumer goods topped the list, totaling 6,000 tonnes.

Another key driver of cabotage growth was the logistics operator segment, which accounted for 46% of total cabotage cargo handled. “This segment includes a large number of customers utilizing door-to-door transport solutions, where logistics operators oversee cargo movement from origin to final destination—offering greater convenience and security for shipments,” Brown added.

In total, 64 cabotage vessels called at TCP throughout the year, averaging more than one berth per week. “With weekly vessel calls, TCP’s cabotage operations ensure reliability and operational efficiency, allowing exporters to meet importers’ deadlines while enabling industries and businesses in Paraná and neighboring states to receive supplies and products swiftly and securely,” she concluded.
