TCP sets triple productivity records in just two months

In July and August 2023, the company in charge of the Paranaguá Container Terminal (TCP) achieved three productivity milestones. The first occurred on July 28th when TCP recorded 5 freight train operations in a single day, surpassing the terminal’s daily average of 4 loading and unloading operations.
In the following month, two more records were achieved, with one in the railway sector again. In August, 9,364 containers were transported by railway. The previous record for rail movement occurred in August 2022, with 8,902 containers.
The third milestone reached by the terminal was at the gate (the entrance and exit point for trucks). Last month, 44,427 containers passed through TCP’s gates, which was 1,075 more than the previous record set in May this year. Felipe de França, Operations Planning Manager, explained that “the successive increases in productivity recorded over the past year are a result of the investments made by the terminal. One of them was the installation of a new dynamic railway scale, which allows for the weighing of moving wagons or train compositions.”
Another investment TCP completed was the electrification of RTGs (Rubber-Tired Gantry Cranes) used for unloading trains. This conversion aims to enhance the equipment’s reliability and availability, reducing maintenance by 90% and resulting in a 95% reduction in CO2 emissions.
By the end of 2023, TCP plans to invest 370 million Brazilian reais in infrastructure projects. This includes a 43% expansion of the reefer yard, used for storing temperature-controlled containers, increasing from 3,572 to 5,126 outlets, making it the largest reefer area among Brazilian terminals. Additionally, a dedicated power substation was built to support the terminal’s energy expansion. TCP is considered the world’s largest corridor for the export of frozen chicken.
The chart below, developed with Datamar’s DataLiner data, shows the progression of container exports and imports at the Paranagua Container Terminal between January 2019 and July 2023.

Rail operations
On July 28th, 808 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) were transported by railway, with 49.25% of the volume destined for Morocco, Spain, and England. The cargo also holds significance on a larger scale: between January and July 2023, approximately 62% of the train shipments received by TCP were frozen meat. During this period, 116,042 TEUs were transported by rail, an increase of 5,180 compared to the previous year.
Another initiative that represents a logistical advantage was the completion in September 2021 of the KBT intermodal project, tailored exclusively for the paper and pulp company Klabin. The project connects the container terminal near Klabin’s factory in Ortigueira, Paraná, to the Paranaguá Container Terminal via the railway operated by Brado. TCP is responsible for managing this terminal.
