Tecon Imbituba spearhead extra operations due to heavy rains hitting Navegantes

Since October 6, Tecon Imbituba, a container terminal owned by Santos Brasil in Imbituba, has been receiving ships initially bound for the Port of Navegantes, also located on the Santa Catarina coast.
The access channel to the Navegantes port was closed last week due to heavy rains that have recently plagued the region. There were 31 turns scheduled until Sunday, and all were canceled due to the adverse weather conditions.
Tecon Imbituba, situated in a deep-water port prepared to accommodate the world’s largest vessels without physical or navigational restrictions, conducted its first extra operation on the 6th. This operation involved a vessel that departed from Europe and was originally destined for Navegantes. On the following Monday (9), a vessel from Asia docked at the terminal, handling approximately 2,200 TEUs. Then, on Wednesday (11), the Tecon received a ship operating on the Mediterranean service. A coastal operation took place on Thursday (12).
Danilo Ramos, Commercial Director of Port Operations at Santos Brasil, emphasized that “due to its sheltered and strategically located deep-water harbor, infrastructure, large-scale equipment, and our commitment to service quality, which is synonymous with Santos Brasil, Tecon Imbituba has the additional capacity to address extraordinary demands. This helps minimize the impact of heavy rainfall on container operations and logistics in the region, as well as other unforeseen events.”
In the second quarter of this year, the terminal had a throughput of 14,614 containers, marking a 9.7% increase compared to last year. This growth was primarily driven by the rise in coastal traffic, which accounted for 93.8% of the total throughput at the terminal. Long-haul traffic represented 6.2% of the total handled in the quarter.
Santos Brasil also operates the General Cargo Terminal (TCG) in Santa Catarina, offering specialized services and trained teams to handle and store high-complexity, high-value cargo. The terminals are strategically located in a deep-water port, capable of operating around the clock, with convenient rail and road access.
