Tecon Rio Grande receives more than 12,000 tons of fertilizers

Tecon Rio Grande, the container terminal of the Wilson Sons Group in Rio Grande do Sul, received 12,152t of fertilizer from January to May 2019, corresponding to 611 TEU (twenty-foot equivalent unit). The result is mainly linked to the successful product import operation via reefer containers, which began last year.
The fertilizers are transported in big bags, capable of loading up to a ton of the product, inside turned off reefer containers. “These equipment are used for the export of frozen meat, and since they mostly returned empty, we identified an interesting opportunity that benefits both shipowner and importer and the terminal itself for the promotion of new containerships,” says Rodrigo Velho, commercial manager of Tecon Rio Grande, noting that all containers are sanitized before receiving any type of cargo.
“Fertilizer containerization has simplified many operations. In addition to better costs, we gained more independence in the purchase of the merchandise, greater efficiency in the cash flow, with smaller inventories,” says Darli Golembieski of Ourofértil, Tecon Rio Grande’s partner in the sector.
The cargo is delivered to the customer in big bags, in containers (where the big bag has been broken), or even in bulk. In addition to fertilizers, the terminal has also been promoting the containerization of other cargoes traditionally transported in bulk, such as grain export and log stoving projects.
With over 20 years, Tecon Rio Grande is one of the most important container terminals in Latin America. It operates the main navigation lines that cross the country and serves around three thousand importers and exporters.
