Wilson Sons reported significant growth at its Tecon Rio Grande terminal in the first nine months of 2024. During this period, the terminal handled 616,581 TEUs and 351,983 containers, marking a 29% increase compared to the same timeframe in 2023.
Exports rose by 10%, driven by shipments of wood, pulp, and household goods. Imports also saw a 17% increase, primarily due to higher volumes of resins, parts, components, and plastics. Transshipment activity surged by an impressive 335% year-to-date, with notable contributions from the launch of the FIL (Far East-India-Latin America Service) operated by Hyundai Merchant Marine (HMM) and the RBM (Rio Grande-Buenos Aires-Montevideo) service run by Bengal Tiger Line (BTL). These new lines have bolstered cargo flows in the Río de la Plata region, further driving the upward trend in transshipment volumes.
September was a record-breaking month for the terminal, with 79,997 TEUs and 45,140 containers handled, a 45% increase compared to September 2023. Transshipments experienced a sharp 498% jump, while imports rose by 32%.
Paulo Bertinetti, CEO of Tecon Rio Grande, expressed his satisfaction with the results. “It’s essential to analyze market trends and how companies stand in the market. By doing so, we can offer innovative solutions and the most comprehensive service, which allow us to reach these important milestones,” he said. “One of the key initiatives in the first nine months was a significant cargo concentration project, where we formed strategic partnerships with South Korean shipping company HMM and Singaporean feeder operator BTL. Our aim is to enhance service efficiency for shippers across southern Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, and Paraguay, setting a historic benchmark for maritime logistics in the Southern Cone,” Bertinetti added.
