Tecon Salvador reports 7.9% growth, securing regional long-haul leadership

Tecon Salvador, a strategic maritime terminal operated by Wilson Sons, reported an impressive 7.9% growth from January to December 2023. The terminal not only set but exceeded its container throughput record, reaching 400,839 TEUs, marking the highest volume handled since its inauguration 23 years ago.
Surpassing the 2021 record of 376,366 TEUs, export activities led the surge with an increase of 94,291 TEUs, followed by cabotage (+81,962), imports (+68,827), transshipment (+66,567), and removals (23,636). The Northeast region, notably Bahia, has proven crucial in addressing Brazil’s current logistical challenges.
The Port of Salvador, renowned for its natural navigability and strategic location, stands out as a regional leader in long-haul navigation, making stops at ports in multiple countries.
Demir Lourenço, Executive Director of Tecon Salvador, emphasized, “This Bahian container terminal stands as one of South America’s most competitive facilities, fueled by continuous investments that contributed to consecutive record-breaking operations. Among Northeastern ports, we handle 41% of foreign trade containers.”
Exports showcased significant contributions from the paper and pulp sector, comprising 29.89% of the total handled, and fruits, representing 11.33%, with an astounding 103% growth.
In imports, the solar energy industry’s chemicals and components demonstrated substantial growth rates of 17.28% and 12.98%, respectively. Cabotage saw the plastics and various polymers sector leading the growth at 17.59%, followed by chemicals at 16.41%, and rice, primarily from Rio Grande do Sul, with a 14.22% increase.

With weekly calls, China and the United States stand as primary destinations for goods exported from Salvador, accounting for 27.14% and 26.84%, respectively. China dominates imports, representing 48.20%. Domestically, states with the highest terminal utilization are Santa Catarina (28.16%), São Paulo (27.30%), Manaus (17.42%), Rio Grande do Sul (12.47%), and Pernambuco (4.75%).
