Temporary pier helps mitigate logistics constraints in drought-stricken Amazonas

The six rivers monitored by the National Water Agency (ANA) recorded historically low levels on Friday (20), exacerbating logistical challenges. At one of the provisional ports in Itacoatiara, 3,000 containers were unloaded during the first week of operations.
The temporary pier at the private Superterminais port began operating vessels from the maritime company One, which offloaded the 3,000 containers for transshipment. In this operation, cargo is transferred to barges capable of navigating shallower waters, each carrying up to 100 containers at a time.
While this operation helps mitigate the impact of the drought, it does not alleviate the logistical costs for companies in the Manaus Free Trade Zone, affecting both industry and commerce.
“The industry in Amazonas has already estimated an additional cost of R$1.4 billion due to the historic 2023 drought, and by September 2024, the market expects a 30% increase in road freight costs and a 20% rise in cabotage. This scenario could directly influence the final price of products, especially those manufactured in the Manaus Free Trade Zone, which may see price hikes of up to 20%,” explains Fernando Balbino, international director of IBL World, a logistics specialist.
According to Balbino, this cost increase could be passed on to the final price of products exported through the Port of Santos, reducing competitiveness in the international market. For September, shipping companies have already decided to apply a “drought surcharge” of USD 5,000 per container.
Current water levels for ANA-monitored rivers:
Madeira River: 0.45 meters (falling)
Negro River: 15.11 meters (falling)
Tapajós River: 1.36 meters (stable)
Solimões River: -2.04 meters (falling)
Juruá River: 4.58 meters (falling)
Amazon River: 2.44 meters (falling)
