According to the Ministry of Agriculture, the volume of Brazilian fertilizer imports rose by 72.4% to 3.25 million tonnes in April compared to the same month last year. Moreover, with an average price increase of 130.1%, reaching US$ 647 per tonne, the costs of importing fertilizers grew 296.7% in April to US$ 2.1 billion.
Despite the logistical and financial difficulties associated with the war in Ukraine, Russia was the main supplier of fertilizers to Brazil in April. Russian sales to the Brazilian market reached US$ 526.7 million, an increase of 295.1% compared to April 2021. Canada, Morocco, the United States, Israel, and China also ranked high on that list.

The volume of pesticides imported by Brazil also grew. In April, the amount doubled and reached 38,400 tonnes. Spendings on imports were 123% higher, reaching US$ 376.2 million. The three main suppliers of pesticides were China, the United States, and India.
In 2022, Brazilian imports of fertilizers reached US$ 6.48 billion, a value 147.3% higher than in the first four months of 2021. There was a 6.4% increase in purchased volumes and a 132.4% increase in the average product prices.
“Producers are concerned about ensuring that the 2022/23 crop will be sufficiently fertilized, which motivated the anticipation of Brazilian imports,” evaluated the Ministry. In the first four months of the year, Russia sent the equivalent of US$ 1.65 billion in fertilizers to Brazil. Canada, China, the United States, and Nigeria complete the list of leading suppliers in the period.
