The success of Brazilian agribusiness is primarily dependent on fertilizer imports. The port of Recife handled approximately 201,509 tonnes of fertilizers in 2021. Out of this sum, 79,543 tonnes came from Belgium, and 38,870 tonnes came from Russia. In addition, Morocco, Canada, and China also exported fertilizers to the Port of Recife, albeit in smaller quantities.

In the first two months of 2022, the quantity of fertilizers handled has gone beyond the numbers registered at the same period last year. In January alone, 27,429 tonnes passed through the port, a growth of 13.46%, compared to the previous year. In February, the records show 26,190 tonnes, an increase of 79.80%. Altogether, 53,619 tonnes of fertilizers passed through the port in the two-month period, representing a 38.40% growth.

Fertilizers are traditionally seen at the Recife anchorage, always in large sums, mainly due to Fertine, a company of the Fertipar group. The company has had a production facility installed in the port area for more than 23 years. All the raw material used in the production of fertilizers comes through Recife. The fertilizers produced there supply agribusinesses in the Pernambuco, as well as in Paraíba, Rio Grande do Norte and Ceará.

Despite the promising results, the Port of Recife is preparing itself for a challenging scenario that may impact imports. “With this conflict, we can foresee an increase in the price of fertilizer. Furthermore, without Russia and Ukraine as suppliers, the demand for imports from countries with lower raw material output will increase, thus raising the cost of the product.”

“As Recife imports more from Belgium, it is possible that the impact will not be so prominent. Still, everything will depend on how the importing company, Fertine, will negotiate with the other suppliers”, says José Divard de Oliveira, Commercial and of Operations at the Port of Recife.
