The lack of desiccant can harm soybean crops says Aprosoja

The Brazilian Association of Soy Producers (Aprosoja Brasil) stated, in a note, that the lack of desiccant agents can harm the Brazilian 2021/22 soybean crop, leading to a drop in productivity.
The herbicide is used to make the crop area uniform for harvesting, a process called desiccation. “This problem has plagued producers since Anvisa banned the use and sale of Paraquat in September 2020.
The decision forced farmers to look for similar herbicides on the market, although only Diquat provides the service with the same quality,” Aprosoja said.
According to Aprosoja, the demand for the agrochemical Diquat has not been met by the industry. The agency said that it had received complaints from producers all over the country who had purchased the product and not received it. “Syngenta, which is the holder of the registration, issued a note on December 23, 2021, informing that there was not enough availability of the product on the market to meet the Brazilian demand,” Aprosoja said.
The association said that the shortage of the product has led to a rise of more than 300% in its dollar price. “Currently, a liter of the product costs more than R$ 100.00, while in the past harvest it cost around R$ 30.00.
Aprosoja Brasil also stated that it is requesting the Ministry of Agriculture an emergency release of the herbicide registration for the direct import of Diquat. “It would be critical to use products available in Mercosur countries.”
“There are companies in Brazil that are awaiting the release of products with the same active ingredient as Diquat, as well as there are companies in Paraguay and other countries that have products available with the same percentage of the active principle,” Aprosoja Brasil stated.
