The Portocem consortium won the auction for the construction of a natural gas thermoelectric power plant in the Pecém Complex’s Export Processing Zone (ZPE) near São Gonçalo do Amarante.
Led by the American Ceiba Energy, a company that owns, develops, and operates power generation assets in Latin America, and designed by Ponte Nova Energia, the Portocem consortium will invest around R$ 5 billion in the installation of the 1,571 MW unit. Shell will be in charge of providing gas to the UTE.
“This will be the second greatest private investment in Ceará’s history, following the large investment by Siderúrgica. Ceiba will make Cegás’ total gas production viable for the state of Ceará, including the ability to supply it to other states. Almost R$ 5 billion will be invested. More than 3,000 jobs will be created during the unit’s development, and more than 800 jobs opportunities will open up during its operation in Ceará,” said Ceará Governor Camilo Santana.
