The Port of Recife will now receive larger-draft vessels after dredging

Now that its dredging is completed, the Port of Recife will begin to receive larger-draft vessels. The ship Avocet Arrow docked at the port on the 17th with 22,800 tonnes of ash. On Wednesday the 18th, the Ben Rinnes will dock with 5,800 tonnes of malt. Also, on the 20th, the BC Lara will bring 20 thousand tonnes of wheat to the terminal.
The handling of such large volumes is possible because the Captaincy of Pernambuco Ports granted two extraordinary resolutions to the Port of Recife authorizing the morning of larger-draft vessels on berths 00, 03, 04, and 05 for 45 days. These berths serve importers and exports in the Recife anchorage.
“If other ships arrive within 45-days, these operations will already be previously authorized,” explained José Lindoso, president of the Port of Recife. He adds that the procedures to allow new vessels to dock after dredging would otherwise take 90 days after a bathymetry study is sent to the Brazilian Navy in Rio de Janeiro.
Increased handling
With the ability to receive larger ships, the Port of Recife expects a 30% increase in handling rate since the berth goes from a depth of 7 to 8 meters to nearly 11 meters, an almost 50% increase.
The de-silting work at the Port of Recife began on January 22nd and dredged 1,050,221.5 cubic meters of sediment from the mooring pier, internal channel, and maneuvering basin. The Lelystad dredger left the Recife anchorage on March 1, when the dredging operation was complete. Two tugboats equipped with a plow then started leveling the bottom of the basin to correct possible faults along the way.
The bathymetry report filed after the work indicated that the dredging levels reached were: 10 meters (from berths 00 to 01), 11 meters (from berths 02 to 06), and 8 meters (from berths 07 to 09). The stretches mentioned above may reach maximum depths, at high tide, of 12.60m, 13.60m, and 10.6m, respectively.
