Vehicle export numbers through the Port of Santos remained stable in the first quarter o the year compared to the same period in 2021. Although there was no increase in the total number of cars, trucks, and buses shipped, the performance is still considered positive by people in the industry, which was also impacted by the covid-19 pandemic.
According to data from the Santos Port Authority (SPA), the state-owned company that manages the port, in the first quarter of 2021, Santos exported 51,253 vehicles compared to 51,243 from January to March this year, only ten units less (-0.02%).
The past two year’s volume represents an industry recovery since, in 2020, the total (39,147 units) was 23.2% lower than in 2022. In addition, the current data exceeds 2019 numbers (43,652 units), a period before the health crisis caused by the new coronavirus.
According to SPA, the main destinations for vehicles exported through the Port of Santos are Argentina, Mexico, South Africa, Colombia, Chile, Peru, and Indonesia.
Exporting Terminal
The Vehicle Export Terminal (TEV), owned by Santos Brasil, is the largest in the country, accounting for 90% of the flow of vehicles in the port of Santos and 60% of all of Brazil. It has an operational capacity of 300,000 cars per year.
With 100 thousand square meters, TEV handled 54,325 vehicles in the first quarter of this year, exporting 48,102 units (-3.1% compared to 2021) and importing 6,223 units (+5.7%).
According to the port operations director at Santos Brasil, Roberto Teller, such a result did not come as a surprise. In fact, the terminal’s performance is expected to rise even further throughout 2022. He recalls that TEV’s movement dropped considerably between March and September 2020 due to the pandemic. From 20 thousand vehicles per month, it reached 4 thousand units.
“In the last quarter of 2020, the volume rose again, reaching 20 thousand units. Probably still in this month of May, we will break the vehicle handling record at TEV, which has been in existence for 16 years. We should pass the 30,000 vehicles milestone,” he says.
Production Drop
Brazil’s National Association of Motor Vehicle Manufacturers (Anfavea) published a balance sheet showing that production fell 17% compared to the first quarter of 2021, from 598 thousand to 496 thousand units manufactured. One of the reasons is the lack of parts, mainly electronic components, made in China.
Despite the slower pace of automakers, vehicle exports from all Brazilian ports performed better than Santos between January and March of this year. There was a rise of 12.8% over 2021, from 95.8 thousand to 108.1 thousand exported units. In terms of value, the amount rose from US$ 1.7 billion to US$ 2.1 billion (+ 23.2%).
