The world’s largest shipping company wants a container terminal in Suape
Jun, 01, 2022 Posted by Gabriel MalheirosWeek 202222
The Danish shipping company Maersk, one of the largest in the world, plans to buy a pier at the Atlântico Sul shipyard in Suape. The private company has been in the process of judicial recovery since 2020 and needs to sell assets to pay creditors.
The auction is being conducted by the courts and is open to proposals.
Through a subsidiary in the Netherlands called APM Terminals, which operates container terminals, Maersk is offering R$ 895 million in exchange for Suape’s south pier. The Brazilian courts’ system has agreed with the commercial proposal.
“In case Maersk gains control of the terminal, it will change the face of the Port of Suape, which currently suffers from competitiveness problems. Such purchase could attract billions in investments and a second container terminal in the port, that currently only houses Tecon Suape, of Philippine origin).”

Companies overseeing the process allege that the debate raises concerns about competitiveness.
“Tecon Suape, the only current operator, may want to remove the competitor from the dispute. If it qualifies and wins, Tecon will earn the right to keep the area for up to two years at the cost of a fine of R$ 30 million”, says a source with access to the business.
The final result of the sale notice will be released upon the decision of the 1st Civil Court of the District of Ipojuca.
