Trade between China and Latin American countries soared to unprecedented levels in 2023.
According to calculations by BBC News Mundo, the Spanish-language news service of the BBC, based on data from the Customs Administration of the People’s Republic of China (AGA), the exchange of goods between the region and the Asian giant surpassed US$480 billion.
The trade balance remained relatively stable, with a slight surplus in favor of Latin America amounting to US$2 billion (approximately R$10 billion).
This new milestone in merchandise trade with China marks another significant step in the upward trajectory observed throughout the century.
In 2000, bilateral trade between the Asian country and Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) barely reached around US$14 billion, as reported by the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC).
