Transnordestina railroad to increase cargo throughput in Pecém twofold

Week 202322

The Transnordestina railroad is set to be a vital transport route in the region it crosses. Not only will it allow the flow of a substantial cargo volume, but it will also have significant economic impacts on related assets and industries.

One such impact is the increase in cargo movement to the Port of Pecém, the final destination of the Transnordestina. After the start of operations, scheduled for 2027, the volume handled at the maritime terminal is forecast to double.

This projection comes from Tufi Daher Filho, CEO of Transnordestina Logística S/A, the company responsible for building the railroad. In an interview with Diário do Nordeste, he notes that the Port of Pecém currently handles around 25 million tonnes per year.

Initially, the Transnordestina will have the capacity to transport 30 million tonnes per year, which could later double with an increase in the number of yards.

“A significant portion of the cargo transported by the railroad will stay in the domestic market, but a large part of it heads to the port. Our expectation is to double the movement to the Port of Pecém in a very short time,” Daher states.

Attracting companies

The spokesperson for Transnordestina Logística S/A also commented that numerous companies should establish themselves along the tracks after the construction works are completed, and the operation starts.

This is because the railroad will offer a fast and cost-effective infrastructure for transporting inputs and goods in and out of production units.

He indicates that, in this way, job creation will be multiplied.

“I am convinced that even the best market study we have conducted is still conservative and pessimistic compared to what will actually unfold,” he emphasizes.

Cargo types

Daher explains that a sizable portion of the railroad’s volumes will likely be made up of grains. In addition, the train tracks will be used to transport general cargo, gypsum, fertilizers, fuels, and products in containers in addition to grains.

The Transnordestina will have a length of 1,210 km, connecting the municipality of Eliseu Marins in the state of Piuí to the Port of Pecém in Ceará.

The train cars on the railroad will reach a maximum speed of 80 km/h, allowing for a complete journey within a day and a half.

Furthermore, the railroad trains will consist of up to 104 wagons, providing the capacity to transport the same amount of cargo as 260 trailers.
