Transnordestina railway to double cargo capacity at Pecém Port by 2035

The Transnordestina railway is set to double the cargo handling capacity of the Pecém Port by 2035. The current annual cargo throughput at the port, around 20 million tonnes, is projected to reach 41 million tonnes.
The railway, slated to have its own terminal within the Pecém Complex, is expected to commence operations in 2027, with an initial throughput of six million tonnes per year.
By 2057, which is when the Transnordestina private concession will end, studies anticipate that the Private Use Port Terminal of Nordeste Logística S.A (TUP Nelog) will handle 33 million tonnes of various cargoes, including grains, minerals, and general cargo (containers).
To meet these goals, Companhia Siderúrgica Nacional (CSN), a Transnordestina shareholder and controller of Nordeste Logística S.A (Nelog), believes all terminals will apply for installation licenses by 2024. Construction will commence in 2025, aligning with the railway’s completion in 2027.
“The construction schedules for both the railway and the terminal are synchronized. Everything interconnected and operational by 2027,” stated José Roberto Correia Serra, Director of Nordeste Logística S.A (Nelog).

STAGGERED INVESTMENT OF R$2 BILLION
Serra revealed that the total investment (staggered) for TUP Nelog is R$2 billion and is expected to be completed by 2035. The project will generate a total of 6,000 direct and indirect jobs during the construction phase, covering an area of approximately 835,000 square meters.
TUP Nelog will feature four terminals catering to grains, minerals, fertilizers, and general cargo (containers). As the construction progresses in phases, Serra explained that the first stage will focus on the warehouses for grain and ore terminals, with the infrastructure for fertilizers slated for the second phase.
CARGO FLOW INSIGHTS
Serra noted that in the initial phase of Transnordestina’s operation, the transport of minerals, both in export and import, is expected to be relatively modest. In contrast, grains are anticipated to dominate operations, particularly from the Matopiba region, a grain-producing region encompassing the states of Maranhão, Tocantins, Piauí, and Bahia.
“It’s also worth noting that not all cargo transported on the Transnordestina will have the port as its destination, as we will have regional integration points, the multimodal terminals along the axis.”
He also revealed that tanking transport between Pecém and the regions through which the railway runs will not be able to access TUP Nelog. However, the Transnordestina Logística Railway (FTL), a private company operating the old railway network passing through Pecém, will be connected to the new private terminal. “TUP Nelog will be integrated with both rail gauges to accommodate FTL and the new Transnordestina.”
