The government has decided to carry out the construction of just one of the two sections of the Transnordestina railway, which connects rural Piauí, in Elizeu Martins, to the port of Pecém, in Ceará. During a live interview with Valor Econômico, the Minister of Infrastructure, Tarcísio Gomes de Freitas stated that for the time being, there is still no economic viability to connect the railway to Porto de Suape, in Pernambuco.
The Nova Transnordestina project was conceived during the government of former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Expected to be completed in 2010, the railway works suffered numerous interruptions and today there is still no set operating date. The project budget has more than doubled. About R$ 7 billion have already been spent and another amount equivalent to this still needs to be spent.
“It was a mess that was inherited, another modeling problem. I understand that the two ‘legs’ do not coexist. I am making it clear to everyone that there is no demand for the Pernambuco branch and for the Ceará branch,” said Tarcísio.
The minister explained that the project will need to have its economic bases redefined. “It’s a contract that needs to be redesigned since much of the works have been canceled At this point, we are committed to this redesign; we are pressing the ‘reset’ key”, he said.
