Rail transport for cargo transported both to and from Paraná port terminals, continues to grow. Data from Portos do Paraná indicates that between January-September this year, the volume of such transport rose 25.2% compared to the same period last year.
According to the port’s business development director, André Pioli, the ideal for the sustainable development of the ports of Paraná is that there is a balance between the modes of transport. According to him, the objective in the medium and long term is to achieve similar participation between road and rail modes in cargo transport, in the port and in reverse directions.
“For this, we are developing projects such as Moegão, for exclusive railway unloading in the East Export Corridor, and supporting the investments that the State Government has been making in Nova Ferroeste”, completes the director, currently acting president at Portos do Paraná.
In the first nine months of this year, 19.7% of the total handled by the ports of Paraná arrived or left by train. This equates to 8,752,258 tons of cargo. In 2020, in the same period, this participation was 15.9% – equivalent to 6,991,429 tons.
The increase was mainly observed in the transport of soy, bran, sugar and fertilizers. Oil derivatives, containers and wheat are also highlighted, segments that did not have the volume handled in railcars in 2020.
Of the 8,890,869 tons of containerized cargo that arrived or left the Paranaguá Container Terminal (TCP), 9% (805,238 tons) were transported by rail. This year, 7% of oil products transported were transported by rail. The percentage is equivalent to 231,582 tons of products.
By road, 2,152,447 tons arrived and departed. Of wheat, of the 223,282 tons imported or exported by the ports of Paraná, 10% (21,646 tons) was by rail.
