Trucks are targets of theft and the robbing of grain before arriving at the port of Paranaguá

The famous “leaks” became commonplace in the municipality of Paranaguá (PR). Trucks loaded with grain have spouts, which are rear lids for pouring the load. By reducing speed, criminals open the spouts so that the cargo falls onto the road and then sweep, bag and sell to receivers that operate in the region. The crime is characterized as aggravated theft and concerns the sector that is directly linked to the dispatch of Paraná’s agricultural production in the port of Paranaguá.
Since the beginning of the year, there have been 122 incidents of cargo theft in the coastal municipality, according to data from the Public Security Secretariat of Paraná (Sesp). The cases usually take place on Avenida Ayrton Senna, the final stretch of BR-277, which gives access to the Port of Paranaguá from the confluence with the contour of PR-408. These looted grains are sold to soybean buyers.
The Federation of Cargo Transport Companies of the State of Paraná (Fetranspar) estimates that, in the 1st half, the costs of these thefts amounted to R$ 739.2 thousand. “The whole society ends up paying. But someone is getting this. It is important to punish the recipients. Whoever receives it needs to be punished”, points out the president of Fetranspar, Sérgio Malucelli.
According to Fetranspar, thefts have been increasing. In 2021, there were 192 cases and, in 2022, 208. Due to recurring cases, Fetranspar has demanded measures from the public authorities.
The president of the Union of Cargo Transport Companies in the State of Paraná (Setcepar), Silvio Kasnodzei, indicates that the problem is old in Paranaguá. “In such a small town, we couldn’t find the receiver. It causes damage to production and affects the country as a whole. It is a waste of time and production. It has already become routine, it is part of everyday life in Paranaguá. When it doesn’t happen, they find it strange”, he highlighted.
Sesp informed that there are actions under development to solve problems in the municipality. The folder said that the Military Police of Paraná reinforced the policing of the port area and placed more vehicles in the region to avoid leaking crimes. Also, teams from the Civil Police of Paraná (PCPR) focus their efforts on investigating the receipt of stolen cargo. A working group composed of representatives of the sector and the security forces was formed to fight new cases of “leaks” in Paranaguá.
