U.S. President Donald Trump announced his long-awaited “reciprocal” tariffs during a ceremony in the White House gardens.
“We will impose a 10% tariff on products from Brazil,” said the president—the lowest of the surcharges revealed today. For China, the tariff will be 34%, and for the European Union, 20%.
On what he called “Liberation Day,” he also confirmed a 25% tariff on vehicles and parts not manufactured in the U.S.
In his speech, Trump stated that these actions are meant to bring factory jobs back to the U.S. and lower prices for American consumers.
The new tariffs are expected to take effect immediately after Trump’s announcement, although the government has yet to publish an official notice, as required.

However, the government did issue an official notice stating that a separate set of tariffs on auto imports, which Trump announced last week, will take effect starting April 3.
Trump had already imposed a 20% tariff on all Chinese imports and a 25% tariff on steel and aluminum. He had postponed a 25% tariff on most Canadian and Mexican products to pressure them to crack down on drug trafficking and immigration, although this is set to expire on Wednesday.
Government officials said that all of Trump’s tariffs accumulate on top of previous ones.
