UAE has bought more chicken meat from Brazil

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) emerged as the top buyer of Brazilian chicken meat in March, witnessing a 16.2% increase compared to the same period last year, totaling 40.7 thousand tonnes. The sector’s performance was disclosed on Friday (5) in a press statement released by the Brazilian Animal Protein Association (ABPA), which also shows a decline in exports.
According to ABPA data, Brazil exported a total of 418.1 thousand tonnes in March, the highest volume ever recorded in the first three months of this year, albeit with an 18.8% decrease compared to the 514.6 thousand tons recorded last year. In terms of value, exports in March amounted to $751.3 million, a 23.4% drop from March 2023, which reached $980.5 million. Year-to-date figures also show a drop: volumes totaled 1.220 million tons, a 7.2% decrease from the first three months of 2023 when shipments reached 1.314 million tonnes. The year-to-date revenue reached $2.141 billion, a 16.7% decrease from the first quarter of 2023, which was $2.573 billion.
According to ABPA President Ricardo Santin, the decline compared to last year is not due to poor sector performance, but rather because March 2023 had atypical numbers that boosted sales for the month and the quarter. “This creates a mistaken idea regarding this year’s March, which followed the sector’s expected flow, maintaining an average above 400 thousand tons monthly,” Santin stated, noting that March 2023 was the only time the “barrier” of 500 thousand tons exported was breached.
The following chart shows container exports (measured in TEUs) laden with poultry meat from Brazil to the UAE between Jan 2020 and Feb 2024. The data comes from Datamar’s DataLiner maritime intelligence service.

Balanced Chicken Market
In the institution’s statement, ABPA Markets Director Luis Rua reiterated that Middle Eastern countries continue to stand out as destinations for exports. “We have observed Middle Eastern countries gaining even more prominence in recent months, with substantial purchases of chicken meat in a context of uncertainties in the region. Overall, the global market demonstrates a balance between supply and demand, which should favor Brazilian exporters in the coming months, especially amid a resurgence of avian influenza in some competing countries,” he said.
In addition to the United Arab Emirates, the top three importers of Brazilian chicken meat in March were China, which imported 38.9 thousand tons, a 48.9% decrease from March last year, and Saudi Arabia, which purchased 35 thousand tons, a 3.9% increase from the same month in 2023. Paraná, Santa Catarina, and Rio Grande do Sul were the leading exporters of chicken meat, accounting for both fresh and processed products.
