UK companies sign manifesto to stop buying soy from illegally deforested areas

On Tuesday, UK food industry leaders signed the “UK Soy Manifesto“, in which they pledge to cut the proceeds of deforestation and environmental destruction from supply chains as quickly as possible, by 2025 at the latest.
Signatories include 27 brands, retailers, food service companies, and livestock producers operating in the UK, representing nearly 2 million tons of soy purchases each year and more than half (almost 60%) of the region’s total consumption.
As per the companies’ communiqué, the signatories agree to: make a strong commitment to combat deforestation so that no soy arriving in the UK leads to environmental deforestation for agricultural use after January 2020; ask direct suppliers to make the same commitment – and demand that their suppliers do so too; write Manifesto commitments into contracts and support suppliers to ensure targets are met; publicly share progress reports; and support improved reporting to verify that soy arriving in the UK is not causing deforestation or destroying other ecosystems.
UK soy consumption – 3.5 million tons in 2020 – while small globally, is adding to pressure on biodiverse landscapes such as the Cerrado, Atlantic Forest, Gran Chaco, and Chiquitânia in South America.
