Unprecedented concession model in PR has the attention of the port of São Francisco do Sul

An unprecedented initiative underway in Paraná is being closely monitored by the port of São Francisco do Sul. If the format is successful, it can be adopted at the terminal in Santa Catarina. At the port of Paranaguá, a concession plan for the access channel to the private sector is being prepared. According to the model, investments in the channel are remunerated through port tariffs. In São Francisco, the deepening of the external channel is in the environmental licensing phase and the concession could be an alternative to finance the work estimated at almost R$ 300 million.
The concession model envisaged in Paraná provides for an expansion of the draft of the access channel to the ports of Paranaguá and Antonina, with a length of 22 km. The works, with dredging and demolition, estimated at R$ 1 billion, will allow the navigation of larger ships. The objective in São Francisco, including Itapoá, is also to increase the draft in the access to Babitonga Bay, from 14 to 16 meters.
The environmental licensing began to be sought in 2015 and, last year, the preliminary license came out. The installation license, which should come out this year, will allow the work to be done. The sediments to be dredged will be used in the widening of Itapoá beach. The concession model was already being studied and the format of Paraná will be analyzed. There are other options, such as seeking federal transfers. The Jorginho Mello government formed a working group to search for resources – the creation of a PPP is under study.
