The inauguration marks the completion of a project spanning approximately 300 kilometers of track, featuring numerous bridges, and connecting the regions from Tacuarembó in the north to the port of Montevideo in the south, passing through Durazno, Florida, and Canelones.
This newly opened route is poised to handle the transportation of up to four million tons of cargo annually, with half of this capacity already allocated for the transportation needs of UPM’s cellulose plant in Paso de los Toros, which includes chemical inputs and fuels.
The origins of Uruguay’s railway system trace back to 1866 when it operated as a public service under state ownership before being sold to English investors. However, on March 31, 1949, as part of Great Britain’s debt settlement from World War II, the railway network reverted to Uruguayan state control.
Subsequently, on September 19, 1952, the State Railway Administration was established.
Under the leadership of President Tabaré Vázquez during the second Frente AmpliaZ government, construction on the new Central Railway commenced, heralding a new chapter in Uruguay’s rail infrastructure. The completion of this project now awaits additional investments to expand services and extend railway branches.
