Uruguay’s exports of goods, measured by their monetary value in dollars, fell 30% year-on-year in July, according to Instituto Uruguay XXI. The drop is mainly due to the plunge in soybean exports, which dropped 84% compared to July 2022, as a result of the severe drought the country is experiencing. There was also a drop of almost 20% in exports of beef and 10% in foreign sales of cellulose. Dairy and rice exports also fell, 16 and 21% respectively.
Year-to-date, from January to July, exports of goods from Uruguay fell by 20%, mainly due to the drop in soy and beef exports. On the other hand, pulp exports accumulated a 20% growth, which is largely due to the start of operations at UPM 2, which began shipping pulp in June.
As for destinations, over the course of this year, exports to China – the main market – dropped 46%, while exports to Argentina dropped 58%. On the contrary, exports to Brazil increased by 19%.
