The scanners purchased in June 2023 for the Port of Montevideo are projected to be operational by October 2024.

According to Caras y Caretas, the president of the National Ports Administration (ANP), Juan Curbelo, confirmed that the scanners will begin functioning on October 2, 2024.

Currently, the scanners remain in storage, while the National Customs Directorate and the National Coast Guard have not seized a cocaine shipment since May 2023.

This purchase followed a “commitment to the public” made in 2019, after a record seizure of 12 tons of cocaine at the port.

In 2020, a bid was launched to purchase a new scanner, but it was declared void in April 2021.

A new bid for three scanners was launched in 2022, which was awarded to the U.S. company S2 Global Inc. for a total of $42 million. After disputes with the losing bidders, the contract was officially awarded to S2 Global in June 2023.

In September 2023, Jaime Borgiani, director of Customs, indicated that the company had until May 20, 2024, to install the scanners at the port. Two scanners arrived on June 21, 2024, and the final one on August 13, 2024.
