US unveils new plans to alleviate congested ports

US port authorities will be allowed to redirect money from other existing projects to help alleviate current traffic jams that are hurting the US economy, according to a plan presented Tuesday to the White House.
Resources already made available could be used more quickly with the new policies, US government officials said. In addition, another $17 billion will be available for ports and waterways following the sanction of the $1 trillion infrastructure project approved by Congress last week.
The measures are a response to bottlenecks in supply chains that continue to grow. The delay in unloading containers at ports is delaying deliveries and causing product shortages. For the White House, this is a logistical and political problem, which persists despite months of attention to the matter.
Under the new program, ports will be able to apply uncommitted resources from existing projects towards solutions to the immediate crisis. The Port of Savannah, Georgia, for example, could reallocate more than $8 million to create five temporary container yards to alleviate congestion at the docks, the White House said.
These new yards will allow the Georgia Port Authority to move thousands of containers off the docks, freeing up space for unloading ships. The Port of Savannah is the fourth-busiest import entry into the US.
“This plan will provide a roadmap for more than $4 billion in funding to repair outdated infrastructure and deepen ports for larger cargo ships,” the White House said in a statement released on the 9th.
