Valparaíso Port Kicks Off 2025 with a 35.7% Surge in Cargo Throughput

The terminals at Valparaíso Port kicked off 2025 with a surge in cargo throughput. In January, the port registered a 35.7% increase, handling 858,830 tonnes—nearly 230,000 tonnes more than in the same month last year.

This growth was primarily driven by increased steel cargo imports and fresh fruit exports. Steel throughput rose by 139.5% year-on-year, reaching a total of 118,497 tonnes in January.

Fresh fruit exports also saw a boost, climbing 25.3% to 211,353 tonnes in the first month of the year. This brings the total volume moved so far this season—covering November, December, and January—to 525,010 tonnes, a 46.1% increase compared to the same period last season.

Containerized cargo throughput also expanded, rising 24.2% to 75,200 TEUs in January—an increase of nearly 15,000 TEUs compared to January 2024.

Franco Gandolfo, CEO of Valparaíso Port, highlighted the continuation of a trend observed in the second half of 2024. “We’ve been working responsibly and in coordination with various stakeholders in the port logistics chain, which has undoubtedly helped ensure a safe and stable operation at the start of 2025.”

“It’s been a busy few weeks at the port, particularly with the fresh fruit season—especially cherries—driving significant volumes. We’ve had to leverage all available resources to optimize operations while also managing increased throughput across other cargo segments. Additionally, cruise ship activity has been demanding this summer. I want to recognize the dedication of everyone involved, whose efforts make it possible to maintain high service standards during peak demand periods,” he added.

“Valparaíso Port remains a key player in the region’s port system, handling one-third of the general cargo moving through central Chile’s ports. Advancing the port expansion project in a sustainable and coordinated manner is essential to driving the growth of our port city,” he concluded.
