VesselsValue, a provider of maritime and air market intelligence, has revealed its data on overall boxship industry trends between 2018 and 2022.
“Over the past year, the market has seen significant activity as container values, charter rates, and freight miles have increased, while the demolition market has seen a drop due to increased demand,” said the agency.
In particular, the study highlights the increase in the value of five-year-old ships, starting in the second quarter of 2020, peaking at around $230 million per ship in November 2021, to remain stable since then.
In the same vein, second-hand ship sales saw an unprecedented increase during 2021, close to $2,500 million in June of that year, well above the $600 million in June 2018.
Meanwhile, daily rental ship prices have soared to up to $150,000 a day for Post Panamax ships and $100,000 a day for Panamax, numbers well above the $20,000 a day maximum paid in April 2018 for Post Panamax vessels.
Currently, the most valuable boxship is the CMA CGM Sorbonne, ULCV class, with a capacity of 23,112 TEUs, built in 2021, with a current value of US$ 319.3 million.
