VLI, a logistics company specializing in terminals, railways, and ports, reached a major milestone in November 2024, transporting 1 million tonnes of dissolving pulp for LD Celulose. Established in 2022, this partnership focuses on delivering customized logistical solutions for this commodity. The pulp is transported along the East Corridor of the Ferrovia Centro-Atlântica (FCA) to the Port of Barra do Riacho in Espírito Santo, where it is exported to the Asian market.
Strategic Partnership Backed by Major Investments
The agreement between VLI and LD Celulose, signed in 2021, aims to transport 500,000 tonnes of dissolving pulp annually from LD Celulose’s facility in Indianópolis in the Triângulo Mineiro region. The 30-year contract includes the development of specialized infrastructure, such as railway yards, and the acquisition of key assets, including locomotives and railcars.
VLI invested R$400 million to meet this demand, purchasing 215 railcars developed in partnership with Randon and nine locomotives manufactured by Wabtec, both Brazilian companies.
Boom in Brazilian Pulp Exports
Brazil’s pulp exports experienced significant growth in 2024, rising 19% in the first half of the year to total $4.95 billion, according to the Brazilian Tree Industry (Ibá). During this period, the country produced 12.7 million tonnes of pulp, a 5.9% increase compared to the previous year, with 9.5 million tonnes exported.
Infrastructure Upgrades to Boost Efficiency
In addition to acquiring locomotives and railcars, VLI made substantial investments in railway infrastructure. In Aracruz, Espírito Santo, the company allocated R$40 million to expand the shunting yard, establish a facility for light railcar maintenance, and implement community-focused social responsibility initiatives.
These upgrades aim to bolster VLI’s capacity and reinforce its role in supporting Brazil’s thriving pulp export market.
