VLI increased the use of the Norte-Sul railway by 10%; revenue was up 19.6%

The logistics company VLI recorded a 10% increase in cargo transportation on the northern stretch of the Norte-Sul Railway (FNS) in 2021, the year in which Brazil recorded a record soy crop, but a significant drop in the corn harvest due to the drought, according to an advance report to Reuters.
The company, which operates railways, ports and terminals, informed that the northern stretch of the FNS handled 11.1 million tonnes last year.
The main products transported by the company were soy, corn and cellulose pulp. The company noted that the flow of these three cargoes grew 10%, in line with the general result in the northern section of the FNS.
“Even in a highly challenging scenario, the operation of VLI at the Norte-Sul railway achieved significant, double-digit growth in cargo volume and revenue,” said CEO Ernesto Pousada in a note.
He pointed out that the company has worked hard to increase its costumer’s competitiveness, “and consequently, the efficiency in the country’s exports”.
The railway’s northern stretch operation grew above the company’s overall total, which transported 59 million tonnes on the rail network last year, up 3.7%.
Products such as fuels, soybean bran, biodiesel and alcohol also make up the mix of flows in this important outflow corridor of Brazilian agribusiness towards the ports of the northern system, the company said, without detailing volumes.
The net revenue of VLI’s operation in the north stretch grew above handling, 19.6% compared to 2020, reaching 1.097 billion reais.
Ebitda reached 563.7 million reais, an increase of about 9% year on year.
VLI, which has mining company Vale as its main shareholder, invested a total of BRL 917.5 million in FNS in 2021, applied to operational assets maintenance and modernization, capacity increase, and environmental and safety projects.
Last year, the company announced its ESG commitments based on the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
Among the goals set are a 15% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions per ton transported, a 20% decrease in the consumption of new water in operations and the achievement of 30% of women in leadership positions.
The company said that goals involving social issues will be met by 2025, while VLI will achieve those related to the environment by 2030.
