Vport to try big bags as alternative to containers for international shipments

Following an open letter from the Vitória Coffee Trade Center and the Brazilian Center for Ornamental Stone Exporters warning public authorities about the impact of the “logistics deficit” on Espírito Santo’s socioeconomic development, Vports—responsible for managing the ports of Vitória, Vila Velha, and Barra do Riacho since September 2022—has been working on alternatives to improve coffee exports from Brazil.

One such solution is using big bags to store coffee on ships. To enable this, the port authority obtained a special license from the State Institute for the Environment and Water Resources (Iema) to operate coffee through the break bulk system, an alternative to the global shortage of containers.

In July, 720,000 bags of coffee were exported, representing a 30.3% increase compared to the same month in 2023. From January to July, exports reached 4.7 million bags, including 4.1 million bags of conilon, 296,000 bags of arabica, and 329,000 bags of soluble coffee.

During the first seven months of this year, Brazilian natural stone exports grew by 8.37% compared to the same period in 2023, totaling $726.5 million. Espírito Santo’s ornamental stone industry accounts for 81.6% of the country’s total exports in this segment.

Additional support came with the renovation of horizontal silos 1 and 2, located in the Vila Velha port complex’s rear area. Together, they cover 10,000 square meters and have a storage capacity of 80,000 tonnes of grains. The adaptation of the silos, which cost R$ 50.2 million, is part of the concession’s contractual obligations.
