The ports of Fortaleza and Pecém, in Ceará, received a visit from the General Director of the National Waterway Transportation Agency (ANTAQ), Eduardo Nery, last week. During the visit, Nery met with the President of the Ceará Port Company (CDC), Lúcio Gomes, to learn about upcoming projects for 2024, and with the President-Director of the Industrial Port Complex of Pecém to discuss ideas for the area, especially the implementation of the green hydrogen hub.
Additionally, the Agency’s Director visited the facilities of the CMA Terminals container terminal and the Tergran grain terminal at the Port of Fortaleza and met with the management of ArcelorMittal, a steel company located in Pecém.
According to the statistics from Antaq’s 2023 Waterborne Transport Statistical Panel, the two ports together saw a throughput of 21.5 million tonnes of cargo, up 1.36% from last year.
“As the regulatory agency, we believe it is important to watch closely the operations of ports throughout Brazil. This week, we were able to accompany the operations of the ports of Fortaleza and Pecém and map out the reasons for their very positive performance in recent years,” said Nery.
The Port of Fortaleza handled 4.4 million tonnes in 2023, a growth of 3.85% compared to 2022. The cargoes that drove this growth were containerized cargoes (52.54% increase), liquid bulk (1.28% increase), and solid bulk (0.76% increase).
On the other hand, the Port of Pecém recorded a throughput of 17.1 million tonnes (+0.74%), with noteworthy mentions to containerized cargoes, which grew by 10.32%, and for general cargo, which increased by 14.02% last year.
