“We lost everything that day”: a year after the Beirut port explosion, Lebanon is still trying to recover

August 4th marked one year since the explosion of the Port of Beirut. The catastrophe took the lives of more than 200 people and left more than 6,000 injured, in addition to a population traumatized to this day by a tragedy that adds to a pre-existing political and economic crisis that has intensified since then. The international community is mobilizing to try to help the Lebanese.
Many Lebanese can recall the exact moment of the explosions and still grieve the relatives and friends killed in the tragedy. “Everyone lost someone. We lost everything that day,” says militant Maraoum Karam.
Along with grief, residents also harbor a sense of injustice. Mainly because the gigantic explosion was caused by a fire in a warehouse that had stored hundreds of tons of ammonium nitrate since 2014, but no one has been charged so far.
The NGO Human Rights Watch (HRW) accuses the Lebanese authorities of criminal negligence. In a 126-page report released this week, the organization documented the numerous violations by politicians and the country’s security authorities in managing this hazardous material deposit.
