Cotton harvested in Luís Eduardo Magalhães (LEM), western Bahia’s largest agricultural producer hub, was exported to Egypt for the first time. The operation took place on Thursday, February 29, in a container terminal at the Port of Salvador, Tecon Salvador, which is managed by Wilson Sons, with the shipment of 2,500 bales of cotton lint, or more than 500 tonnes of the product.
After leaving the farm, the cargo was directed to the Wilson Sons Logistics Center and stuffed into 22 containers, then transported to Tecon Salvador, from where it continued its journey to Port Said West port. The cargo will take approximately three weeks to complete the journey.
Cotton produced in Bahia and other regions that are part of the Matopiba complex – located in the North-Northeast of Brazil and consisting of the states of Maranhão, Tocantins, Piauí, and Bahia – is exported via Tecon Salvador to Asia (Pakistan, Bangladesh, China, Indonesia, and Vietnam) and Eurasia (Turkey), the current main import markets for the product.
On a comparison note, the following chart shows the export volume of cotton in the top exporting port in Brazil, the Port of Santos, between January 2022 and January 2024. The data is from DataLiner.

Certification
Being active in the cotton market requires certification, and the Logistics Center serving Tecon Salvador has been duly accredited since 2023.
“The socio-environmental seal is part of the Responsible Cotton Program for Inland Terminals (ABR-Log), issued by the Brazilian Association of Cotton Producers (Abrapa) and the National Exporters Association (Anea), endorsing the quality of cotton preparations for export through a process called stuffing. It consists of accommodating the cargo inside containers, without damage and free of contamination,” explains Guilherme Dutra, commercial director of Tecon Salvador at Wilson Sons.
The Wilson Sons Logistics Center is just 15 kilometers from the Port of Salvador and operates as a Special Zone for Customs Export Clearance (Redex). On-site, exporters have access to special handling and storage services, according to the logistical needs of each product, including customs clearance, carried out through remote inspection by the relevant authority, providing agility and security for industries.
