With Santos native as Ports Secretary, Brazil gov’t aims to modernize port administration

The modernization of port administration in Brazil is a priority for the Ministry of Ports and Airports, which will be even more agile now that Fabrizio Pierdomenico has been appointed national secretary for Ports and Waterway Transportation. This is what Minister Márcio França stated when commenting on the appointment of the new ministry member, which was made official on March 2 in an ordinance published in the country’s Federal Gazette.
Economist and port consultant with a career predominantly installed in the Santos region, Pierdomenico’s choice involved more than his resume. In a note, França confessed to paying particular attention to the country’s main port asset, the Port of Santos. “It is the first time that we have a Minister and Secretary of Ports from the region, people who know the challenges of the port of Santos firsthand,” he highlighted.
In Santos, “among the reformulations that will be implemented is the appointment of the new board of the Port Authority. This process will be carried out in the coming weeks,” added the minister.
This will not be the first time Pierdomenico will command public policies for ports in the Federal Government. Between 2008 and 2011, he was Secretary of Planning and Port Development of the Special Secretariat for Ports, working with Ministers Pedro Brito and Leônidas Cristino.
Previously, between 2003 and 2007, he was the Commercial and Development Director of the former Companhia Docas do Estado de São Paulo (Codesp), currently Santos Port Authority (SPA). In 2011, he returned to the private sector as managing partner of Agência Porto Consultoria Portuária e Empresarial.
Reinforcement
The arrival of Pierdomenico reinforces the Ministry of Ports team, which, since January 17, also counts on engineer Roberto Duarte Gusmão as executive secretary. Gusmão was president of the Suape Port Industrial Complex between February 2021 and November 2022.
