Overall, wood exports stemming from the planted tree sector recorded a 20.7% increase in value from January to September 2024 compared to last year. Highlights include a 47.2% rise in sales to Europe and a 32.7% increase to Asia/Oceania. China, the leading buyer of Brazilian forest products, saw a 12.5% increase. The trade balance for the period closed with a surplus of USD 10.7 billion, an increase of 22.2%.
The top product in the forest products agenda, pulp exports grew by 29.5% (USD 7.8 billion). There were also increases in plywood (+18.4%—USD 594.5 million) and paper (+5.9%—USD 1.885 billion), driven by packaging paper.
Exports of Furniture and Mattresses
Brazil recorded 18.7 million tonnes of pulp produced between January and September 2024, a 3.6% year-over-year increase. In the same period, paper production reached 8.6 million tonnes, up by 6.1%, and was also driven by packaging.
The planted trees sector is a significant component of Brazil’s export agenda, accounting for 3.8% of the country’s total exports in the first nine months of 2024. It is also the fourth-largest export category in Brazil’s thriving agricultural sector, with 7.7% of the agribusiness’s total exports during this period.
Planted Trees Markets
China remains the leading market for Brazilian forest products and is the top destination for Brazilian pulp, ahead of Europe and North America. The Asian giant purchased USD 3.3 billion (+12.5%), with 95.7% of this amount in pulp. In the first nine months of 2024, China increased its purchases of the two main forest products compared to the same period last year: pulp (+12.8%) and paper (+137.3%).
Europe, the second-largest market, showed the highest growth during the period, with a 47.2% increase in exports (USD 2.9 billion). Pulp sales to the continent rose significantly, 60.1% compared to 2023. Meanwhile, North America (USD 2.6 billion) increased its purchases by 19%.
“Europe has a strong appetite for Brazilian forest products, with growth close to 50% this year. This sales strength reflects the sector’s historical commitment to sustainability in Brazil, meeting the world’s highest sustainability standards. We are an example of a large-scale bioeconomy,” said Paulo Hartung, president of Ibá. The Boletim Mosaico also highlights double-digit growth in exports to China and North America, two established markets for Brazilian products that continue to increase their purchases.
