The World Bank has announced a US$9 million donation from the Livable Planet Fund to support the Pecém Verde energy transition program, which focuses on implementing a clean hydrogen project at the Pecém Complex. The initiative aims to reduce costs associated with adopting strategic technologies that accelerate the transition to a more sustainable energy matrix, aligned with global decarbonization commitments and efforts to combat climate change.

With an estimated total investment of US$ 175 million over five years, Pecém Verde will receive a combination of resources from various international institutions, including donations and loans. In addition to the US$ 9 million from the Livable Planet Fund, the World Bank will finance US$ 90 million for the project. The Climate Investment Funds – Renewable Energy Integration (CIF-REI) program will also contribute US$ 33.5 million in loans and US$ 1.5 million in donations. In comparison, the Pecém Complex will contribute up to US$ 41 million as a counterpart.

“This partnership, which brings in new resources, will enable Pecém Verde to generate significant economic opportunities, promote the creation of skilled jobs, and strengthen Ceará’s position as a global leader in decarbonization initiatives. This is one of the State Government’s top priorities,” said Hugo Figueirêdo, President of the Pecém Complex.

About Pecém Verde

Pecém Verde is a strategic project that will develop the necessary infrastructure for producing and exporting green hydrogen, solidifying the Pecém Complex as a global hub in the sector. Planned investments include:

Implementation of basic infrastructure for utility corridors and access to the hydrogen production sector at the Pecém Complex; expansion of the Multi-Utility Terminal (TMUT) at the Port of Pecém, including the construction of a new mooring berth; and expansion of Pier 2 at the port terminal, designed to support the production and export of clean hydrogen and its derivatives.

The initiative marks Brazil’s energy transition milestone and reinforces Ceará’s role as a leader in innovative and sustainable solutions for combating climate change.
