The arrival of the Wozmax-class vessel, Cape Apollo, marked a significant milestone for port operations in Sepetiba Bay. This bulk carrier, stretching an impressive 327 meters in length and 52 meters in width, docked at Porto Sudeste on February 19th and departed on the 21st, laden with 225,000 tonnes of iron ore. This logistical feat was made possible by substantial enhancements to the maritime infrastructure at Port of Itaguaí, which also serves Porto Sudeste and other private terminals within Sepetiba Bay.
PortosRio, the public company tasked with managing the Port of Itaguaí, emphasized that widening and deepening the Main Channel was essential for accommodating larger vessels. Last year, operational draft depths were increased from 17.8 meters to 18.3 meters following extensive construction efforts.
Francisco Martins, President of PortosRio, celebrated this achievement, commenting that “the enhancements to maritime infrastructure carried out by the Port Authority have led to greater operational efficiency and improved navigational safety conditions, enhancing the competitiveness of the Itaguaí Port Complex.” Martins further emphasized that “the transportation of iron ore aboard a large-capacity vessel like the Wozmax significantly contributes to reducing operational costs and greenhouse gas emissions.”
