Another Wozmax-class vessel departed from Porto Sudeste on the 17th, carrying a record-breaking shipment of 246 thousand tons of iron ore, marking a significant milestone for the terminal situated on Madeira Island in Sepetiba Bay.
“Receiving ships of this class puts us in the spotlight on the international scene. Brazilian ore has a much higher iron content and metallurgical characteristics than other countries, which already gives us a significant advantage, and now, with the increase in cargo shipped, we are more competitive, reinforcing our position in the global market,” commented Guilherme Caiado, Operations Director.
The Houheng 6 vessel, measuring 330 meters in length and 57 meters in width, is the second-largest vessel to dock at Porto Sudeste. This follows the departure of the first Wozmax-class ship in February, which carried 225 thousand tons of iron ore.
“In the iron ore sector, as in any other sector, it is essential to reach new levels of efficiency, innovation, and sustainability. From the first to the second Wozmax, we increased loading by 21 thousand tons. In addition to economies of scale, this advance also represents a positive contribution to reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, which converges with our climate strategy and environmental commitment,” concluded Caiado.
The ability to accommodate larger vessels at the terminal was made possible by investments from Porto Sudeste itself to increase the region’s operational draft, ensuring high levels of navigation safety. Now, at 18.30 meters, larger ships can transport greater amounts of cargo, thereby enhancing the logistical efficiency of operations.
Porto Sudeste achieved a monthly record in March for the volume of iron ore unloaded, totaling 2,579,111 tons. This surpassed the previous highest mark of 2,566,700 tons recorded in May of the previous year. With over 6 million tons unloaded in the first quarter of 2024, it already marks the best period recorded at the terminal, surpassing 876 thousand tons in the same period last year.
These numbers underscore the evolution of the terminal’s logistics capacity, which continues to show an upward trajectory.
Porto Sudeste, a private port designed to handle various types of solid bulk, particularly iron ore, and liquids, stands as one of Brazil’s most efficient terminals. With a capacity to handle up to 50 million tons of iron ore annually and boasting record-breaking unloading times, it is strategically located on Madeira Island in Itaguaí (RJ). The project is considered one of the most modern in the country, representing the shortest distance between iron ore producers in Minas Gerais and customers in Brazil and abroad.
