“The drop in export volume reflects the continuity of the logistical bottlenecks in world maritime trade. The scenario is worrying because industry experts point out that these obstacles should drag on through 2022 due to the large volume of Brazilian agricultural products stuck in ports and the harvests that are shipped from the second half of the year onwards”, explains Nicolas Rueda, president of CECAFE.

Another concern is rising costs, which ” have contributed to the sharp rises in inflation, causing a shortage of essential inputs for agribusiness in Brazil and an escalation in prices that is beginning to worry producers as a whole. Logically, the coffee sector is not spared from these afflictions”, he comments.

Destinations

From 2021 to the end of October, Brazil exported coffee to 119 countries. The United States continues as the main importer, having purchased 6.468 million bags, an amount practically stable compared to the 6.489 million acquired in the same period in 2020. This volume represented 19.4% of total shipments in the country so far.

Germany, with a 16.5% market share, imported 5.474 million bags (-8.2%) and occupied second place in the ranking. Italy ranks third, with the purchase of 2.383 million bags (-7.7%); Belgium purchased 2,270 million bags (-22.6%), and Japan purchased 2.074 million bags (+12.5%).

Another highlight is the appearance of two other coffee-producing countries among the main destinations for Brazilian coffee exports. Colombia occupies seventh place in the ranking with its acquisition of 945,694
bags between January and October 2021, showing a substantial increase of 56.7% compared to purchases made in the first 10 months of last year. Of this total, 885,179 bags are of the green grain, used for industrialization and domestic consumption.
