With an inflow of US$ 570.6 million in November, the foreign exchange revenue from Brazilian coffee exports increased to US$ 5.4 billion in the accumulated result for 2021, presenting an evolution of 5.9% in comparison with the inflows obtained in the same period 2020. In the same period, the volume shipped decreased 10%, closing the first 11 months of this year at 36.3 million bags of 60 kg. The data are part of the monthly statistical report of the Brazilian Coffee Exporters Council (Cecafé).
According to the organization’s president, Nicolas Rueda, the increased revenue reflects a strong exchange rate scenario and high international prices for the product. “We have been experiencing very high volatility in the market, with prices approaching record levels in reais. The average export price in 2021, at US$ 148.81 per bag, is the highest since 2017. In addition, the dollar remains strong against the real, which favors the growth of the inflow of resources to Brazil with coffee remittances”, he explains.
Regarding the drop in the volume of exports, Rueda notes that it results from the impact of the continuity of logistical bottlenecks in global maritime trade, the smaller crop harvested by Brazil in 2021, the lack of space on ships, successive cancellations of bookings, cargo rollovers, and extremely high freight rates. This scenario is worrying, as industry experts indicate that it will last into 2022 due to the large volume of agricultural products accumulated in the ports of Brazil, which will impact the performance of our shipments”, he projects.
Crop year
In the first five months of the 2021/22 coffee season, Brazil is registering the best foreign exchange income in the last five years. The country obtained US$ 2.6 billion with the shipment of 15.3 million bags from July to November, representing an increase of 4.4% in income, but a decrease of 24.5% in volume.
Main Destinations
In the accumulated result for the year, Brazil exported coffee to 121 countries, with the United States remaining at the top of the ranking, acquiring 7.072 million bags, a volume 2.9% lower than that measured between January and November 2020. This amount represented 19.5 % of total shipments in the country so far.
Types of coffee
Arabica coffee was the most exported in the year to date, with 29.219 million bags shipped abroad, representing 80.5% of the total. The canephora variety (robust + conilon) had 3.459 million bags shipped, representing 9.5%. Next, come the segments of instant coffee, with 3.569 million bags (9.9%), and roasted and ground coffee, with 41,096 bags (0.1%).

The maritime complex in Santos (SP) is the main exporter of coffee in Brazil this year, exporting 27.730 million bags between January and November, which is equivalent to 76.4% of the total. Next, there are the ports of Rio de Janeiro, which accounted for 16.7% of shipments by exporting 6.074 million bags, and Vitória (ES), which accounted for 2.8%, exporting 1.015 million bags abroad.
