Cargo handling in the first half of 2020 grew 7.2% at Rio de Janeiro port in relation to the same period in 2019, with 3.747 million tonnes handled. This is an increase of 250,000 tonnes in relation to the first six months of 2019. The data was released by Companhia Docas do Rio de Janeiro (CDRJ) on Monday, July 20.
The survey indicates that one of the main drivers of growth in the first six months of 2020 was pig iron exports, which reached 867,000 tonnes handled. The number represents an increase of 54.5% in relation to the 1st semester of 2019.
Another important achievement by the point that was included in the CDRJ report was the Rio de Janeiro Wheat Terminal (TTRJ) that came on-stream. In the first half of this year, the new terminal handled 204,000 tonnes of wheat.

The director-president of CDRJ, Francisco Antonio de Magalhães Laranjeira, stressed that “even with the economic impacts generated by the pandemic, the Port of Rio de Janeiro managed to present a positive result in the first half of 2020”. And the prospects are good, according to him: “Our forecast for cargo handling in the second half of 2020 is that we hope to maintain the good performance observed in the first half of the year”.
