Pecém port receives largest vessel ever to deal with fruit exports to Europe

Last Saturday, the Port of Pecém received a vessel measuring 330 meters by 48 meters –  the MSC Shuba B, coming from the Port of Salvador. The vessel became the largest ship to have docked in Pecém since it was officially opened in March 2002, and docked at berth 10 of the TMUT (Multiple Use Terminal).

With a capacity of 12,238 TEU, vessel traveled to the Ceará based port for the first time to fulfill the NWC service route, operated by MSC (Mediterranean Shipping Company) to connect Brazil to northern Europe.

MSC Shuba B docked at the Port of Pecém driven by the growth of Brazilian fruit production. Melons from Rio Grande do Norte represent the majority of the cargo handled by Pecém in this segment. Fruits such as mangoes and grapes, produced in Ceará and in the region of the São Francisco Valley, are also exported via the port terminal.

Therefore, it is the states of Rio Grande do Norte, Ceará, Bahia, and Pernambuco that most produce fresh fruit for countries like the United States, Holland, United Kingdom, and Spain – currently the countries that receive the most Brazilian fruit exported via the Port of Pecém. The expectation for this year’s harvest is positive and signals a growth of at least 30% in relation to the volumes achieved in 2019.

Fruit Export Services from the Port of Pecém

– Northern European countries: NWC service via MSC
– Mediterranean Sea Countries: WMED service via MSC
– United States: TANGO service via Hamburg Sud

The operation involving the Shuba B at Pecém lasted almost 24 hours, and the ship proceeded towards ports located in northern Europe. The first one will be the port of Rotterdam, where the ship should arrive by the 10th of September. From the Dutch port, Shuba B will perform the rest of the NWC service by calling at the following European ports: London / England (14 days); Bremerhaven / Germany (16 days); Hamburg / Germany (18 days); Antwerp / Belgium (20 days); Le Havre / France (22 days); and Sines / Portugal (25 days).
